WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to visiting Old Dominion Sunday afternoon at Leighton Stadium. The Monarchs won two of three doubles matches to a take a 1-0 lead and then split the six singles matches to edge the Demon Deacons.
Old Dominion improves to 4-6 on the season.
Schwartz and Proctor, playing doubles together for the first time, defeated Old Dominion's Verena Munzinger and Kerstin Endlich 8-3 at No. 3 doubles, but that would be the only doubles win for Wake Forest. Junior Nataly Cahana and Maretha van Niekerk posted a 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles and senior Julia Sotiriu and freshman Coralie Herrmann produced a 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles for the point.
Eighteenth ranked Cahana breezed to a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles and van Niekerk upset #65 Katie Martzolf, 6-1,6-1 at No. 2 singles for a 3-0 Lady Monarch lead. The Demon Deacons then rallied to win the next three singles matches to tie the game up at 3-3.
With the score tied, Old Dominion's Munzinger rallied to beat WFU's Sandie Knight 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 at No. 6 singles, the deciding match.
The Lady Monarchs will return to action next Friday, on March 21 at Virginia Tech.
