NORFOLK, VA. - Tim Allen had three hits including a two-run homer in thethe fourth and relief pitcher Chris Homer held off two Monarch rallies as MaristCollege defeated Old Dominion, 3-2. Marist, the defending MAAC Champions arenow 2-0, ODU drops to 4-4.
Marist scored first as Mike Sidoti singled home Matt Griffiths in the first inning.With two out in the fourth, Keith Brachold doubled and Allen then homered to rightcenter field.
ODU's runs came in the sixth and eighth innings. Steven Harris (Va. Beach, Va.)plated Brent Sollenberger (Chambersburg, PA.). In the eighth John Oehler's (Audubon, NJ.)groundout scored Derrick James (Terre Haute, IN.). Chris Homer then came in forMarist and got out of the inning with a strikeout. In the ninth Evan Chipman (Raleigh, NC)and Brandon Le Noir (Ocala, FL.) Each singled with one out, but Homer got Sollenberger tohit into a double play to end the game. All-American lefthander Chris Tracz, the MAAC 2002 Pitcher of the Year pickedup the win, while ODU freshman Ricky Shefka, the CAA Rookie of the Week (Kinston, NC.) took the loss. The two teams play the third and final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
