NORFOLK, VA -- The Old Dominion women's tennis team ended a five-game slide as they defeated George Washington University, 6-1, over the weekend. The Lady Monarchs improved to 2-5 on the season.
The Lady Monarchs swept the doubles competition to earn the double points. Newcomers Coralie Herrmann and Maretha Van Niekerk, played together for the first time all season at No. 1 doubles, posted an 8-1 win over the Colonials Tracy Wei and Samantha Fisher. Junior Nataly Cahana and freshman Verena Munzinger teamed for an 8-0 blanking over George Washington's Natasha Bode and Estee Bartell at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, the duo of senior Julia Sotiriu and freshman Kerstin Endlich emerged with an 8-1 win over Nazli Gencsoy and Sevia Gonca.
In singles action, the Lady Monarchs recorded wins at five of the six positions, all in straight sets. Fifth ranked Nataly Cahana (Qiriat Bialik, Israel) cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over George Washington's Tracy Wei at No. 1 singles. Freshman Maretha Van Niekerk, playing at No. 2 singles, used a 6-3, 6-1 match for a victory over Nazli Gencsoy. Freshman Kerstin Enlich posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles over the Colonial's Natasha Bode. Senior Julia Sotiriu (Wendelstein, Germany) used a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Sevia Gonca at No. 4 singles. Freshman Coralie Herrmann (Porrentruy, Switzerland) earned the fifth and final win in singles play with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Samantha Fisher.
The Lady Monarch women's tennis team will return to action against #35 Harvard on Saturday, March 1st.
