ODU Defeats Rutgers, 5-1 Behind Verlander

NORFOLK, VA. - Old Dominion University sophomore righthander JustinVerlander (Goochland, VA.) scattered four hits to lead the Monarchs to a 5-1 victoryover Rutgers Friday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. The Monarchs are2-2 on the season, Rutgers is 0-1.

Verlander fanned seven, walked five in eight-plus innings to earn his secondwin of the season. In the top of the ninth, working on a possible second straight shutout,Verlander walked Graig Badger and Vinny Esposito. With two outs , Matt Wolski singledhome Badger for the Scarlet Knights run. Freshman Jason Godin (Stafford, VA.) came into get the final out of the game, fanning pinch hitter Steve Hook.

Brandon Le Noir (Ocala, FL.) knocked in two runs for the Monarchs. In the first inninghe singled home Brent Sollenberger (Chambersburg, PA.) and in the seventh his sacrificefly plated freshman Keith Hahn (Valley Stream, NY.). Hahn knocked in Justin Gregula(Washington, PA.) in the second, Stephen Harris (Va. Beach, VA.) knocked in Derrick James(Terre Haute IN.) In the third. Le Noir, who had two hits on the day also scored on an infield error in the third. Wolski led Rutgers with two hits.

The two teams play again on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
