PHILADELPHIA- The Drexel women's basketball team had three chances to tie thegame in the last 35 seconds, but their upset bid fell short as the LadyMonarchs of Old Dominion defeated the Dragons 54-52 in a Colonial AthleticAssociation contest Friday night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
Drexel (6-6, 2-1 CAA) held Old Dominion (5-5, 2-0 CAA) scoreless over thelast six minutes of the game, but could not get closer than the finaltwo-point deficit, themselves not scoring over the final three minutes.
Freshman center Corrina Turner led Old Dominion with 17 points and agame-high 10 rebounds, while senior guard Okeisha Howard had 10 points and ateam-high five assists. Junior forward Monique Coker had seven points andsix rebounds.
Bridget Scanlan (Glenolden, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) had a game- and season-high18 points, including six-of-nine shooting from three-point range. Scanlan'ssix threes ties the Drexel single-game record held by Barb Yost and JessicaCopskey. Senior guard Steph Frysinger (York, Pa./Central York) contributed12 points and a game-high six assists.
A lay-up by Candace Wilkins (Fort Washington, Md./Gwynn Park) brought Drexelwithin two at the final 54-52 with 3:14 to go. Neither team could manage ashot over the next two-and-a-half minutes, until Wilkins was fouled with 35seconds remaining. Wilkins missed both free throws, but the Dragonsregained possession after the Lady Monarchs knocked the ball out of boundson the rebound attempt. Wilkins missed a lay-up on the ensuing possession,then committed a foul on the rebound. With Drexel pressuring the inboundpass, Coker broke long, but missed an uncontested lay-up that CatherineScanlon (Drexel Hill, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) gathered as a time-out wascalled. Wilkins again drove to the right side, but her shot was blockedout-of-bounds by Turner with one-tenth of a second remaining. Drexel couldnot manage a tip off of the inbounds pass.
Drexel, led by five first-half three pointers by Scanlan and a tough zonedefense actually led Old Dominion 30-27 at the break, helped, though by 14Lady Monarch turnovers, compared to Drexel's eight. Drexel was out-shot 48percent (23-48) to 33 percent (20-61) and out-rebounded 42-27, but forcedOld Dominion into 27 total turnovers, compared to 13 for the Dragons.
Wilkins finished the night with eight points, as did junior forward ViktoriaHollosy (Budapest, Hungary/Nagy Sandor), who reached her career-high inpoints all in the second half. The 6-5 Hollosy played much of the secondhalf, as Katrina Martin (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton), the starting forwardat 5-9 was held scoreless for the first time this season.
