WILMINGTON, N.C. - Old Dominion drained three consecutive 3-pointers late in the second half, including a pair of key shots by John Waller, to snap UNC Wilmington's 10-game home winning streak, 67-57, Monday night at Trask Coliseum.
The Monarchs improved to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the conference victory. The Seahawks now stand 7-4 and 1-1.
Senior forward Rasheed Wright led three Monarchs in double figures with 15 points, followed by junior guard John Waller with 14 and senior forward Ricardo Marsh with 10.
Senior guard Brett Blizzard paced the Seahawks with 20 points and senior center Craig Callahan added 16 points.
ODU dialed long distance in the final 20 minutes, canning 7-of-10 treys in the period, to hand the Seahawks their worst home loss since a 74-52 loss to Campbell on Dec. 16, 1995. It was also the worst home conference loss for the Seahawks since a 63-45 defeat to Virginia Commonwealth on Jan. 29, 1995.
In the second half, Blizzard fired consecutive 3-pointers and the Seahawks built a seven-point lead, 31-24, on Anthony Terrell's dunk with 18:12 remaining. ODU answered, however, with a 12-2 run to take a 36-33 advantage on T.J. Walden's floater in the lane at 14:10.
Leading 47-41 with nine minutes remaining, ODU used a pair of triples by Waller and another by Wright to build a 56-41 cushion. ODU then built its largest lead of the game, 18 points, with 4:27 left when Waller connected on a pair of free throws for a 61-43 lead.
Old Dominion took advantage of cold shooting by UNCW in the first 20 minutes to take a 24-23 into the break. After Joel Justus opened the game with a layup for the Seahawks, the Monarchs scored eight unanswered points for an 8-2 edge and then used a late mini-run to hold off the Seahawks by one point at intermission.
Freshman John Morris scored a career high seven points off the bench. Troy Nance who startedthe game scored six points and dished out six assists. Marsh and Walled led ODU withnine rebounds each.
