The Monarchs and Midshipmen played scoreless soccer until the 69th minute when Navy's Aaron McElhose took a feed from Dan Montgomery and hit the back of the net. They put up their second tally 12 minutes later on a shot to the right corner by Matt Sanchez to go up 2-0. ODU answered with one goal from junior Michael Tooley (Richmond, VA) with three minutes remaining on the clock. Junior Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) sent a lob pass to Tooley and he hammered it past the diving Midshipmen goalie for his second score of the preseason.
Old Dominion had several chances to put a goal on the board as Vendegh blasted a penalty kick just over the cage in the first half. They also had an opportunity in the second period as sophomore Kyle Hartley took a rebound off a blocked Vendegh shot and nailed the goal post.
The Monarchs, who held the advantage in shots, 16-6, and corners, 6-1, were forced to play a man down when Belus Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) received his second yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct in the 89th minute. The teams combined for 24 fouls and six cards in the game
ODU will be home once again next Friday to open the regular season with a matchup at 7 p.m. against Va. Tech.
