Verlander Named CAA Rookie of The Year

TUCSON, AZ - Old Dominion University sophomore righthander Justin Verlander(Goochland, VA.) as been selected to the second team of the 2003 Louisville Slugger pre-season All-American team as selected by "Collegiate Baseball" newspaper.

The 6-4 sophomore compiled a 7-6 record with a CAA best 1.90 earned runaverage. He fanned 137 batters in just 113.2 innings, including 17 against James Madisonand 12 against Virginia Tech. Verlander earned CAA Rookie of the Year honors and wasa first team Freshman All-American by both "Collegiate Baseball" and "Baseball America".He was also extended an invitation to try out for Team USA over the summer. Firstbaseman Eddie Kim of JMU was selected to the third team squad.

The Monarchs open the 2003 season on Feb. 14 when they play Vanderbilt in thefirst round of the Citadel Tournament.
