NORFOLK, Va.- The Old Dominion Lady Monarchs(20-3) scored within minutes of the opening whistle and Maryland Terrapins(17-4) needed overtime to advance to second round action in the NCAA FieldHockey Tournament on a rainy Foreman Field.
First round action continued, as did the rain, on Foreman Field withMaryland using overtime to defeat William and Mary 2-1.
The Tribe and Terps went back and forth through the opening half untilfreshman forward Jackie Ciconte (Wilmington, DE) from sophomore ColleenBarbieri (Centerreach, NY) with 13:11 on the clock gave Maryland a 1-0lead.
Maryland fired away on the Tribe net 14 times in the second half, butthe William and Mary defense, behind eight second half saves by goalkeepersenior Claire Miller (Va. Beach, VA) and two defensive saves by sophomoreAnna Davis (Richmond, VA), managed to stop the Terps from scoring. Withtime ticking away in the second half, the Tribe was awarded their lonepenalty corner of the second half with 8:37 remaining. Senior Ann Ekberg(Va. Beach, VA) passed the ball to sophomore Kate Baird (Lismore,Australia) waiting at the left side of the Terp net to tie the game at 1-1.
With just under ten minutes remaining in the first overtime session,senior midfielder Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, PA) found the open holeoff a penalty corner to record the golden goal for the Terps.
Miller made 11 saves in net for the Tribe, while rookie Tori Cano (SeaCliff, NY) made three saves and played all 83 minutes in her second careerstart.
Maryland outshot the Tribe 20-3 and out cornered William & Mary 15-3.
Old Dominion and Maryland will face each other for the third time thisseason. Old Dominion holds the all-time series advantage 19-10-1. TheTerps took a 2-0 victory in their first meeting back on September 8th, butthe Lady Monarchs avenged the loss with a 1-0 home win on October 19th.Maryland has not defeated Old Dominion on Foreman Field since 1996. Gametime is slated for 2:00 p.m.
