The Old Dominion men's soccer team lost 2-1 to Drexel on Tuesday night in the first round of the 2002 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament. Pete Pittaoulis scored with 5:26 left in double overtime to lead the #6 Dragons to the upset over the #3 Monarchs.
Pittaoulis gathered a loose ball in the middle and fired a shot from the top of the box over ODU goalie Sam Cameron (Raleigh, NC) to break a 1-1 tie and end the Monarch's season.
Drexel also scored the first goal of the game as Dan Zajac took a pass from Tim Mochan and broke free down the left side and netted the goal at 10:55 in the first period. ODU would tie it up when Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) tallied his 15th goal of the year in the second half with a successful penalty kick. The Monarchs controlled most of the play throughout the contest but could not convert any other scoring opportunities.
Cameron made 7 saves in goal for ODU while Jim Greco had four stops for the Dragons. The Monarchs also outshot DU 19-17 and held a 12-2 corner kick advantage.
Drexel now moves on to face #2 William and Mary this Friday night at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex at 7:30. Old Dominion ends the season with a 9-8-1 overall record and a 6-2-1 conference mark. This is the first time in four years ODU has not reached the CAA semifinals.
The fourth ranked Towson advanced earlier today after defeating #5 James Madison 3-0 and will play Virginia Commonwealth at 5:00 p.m. at the Sportsplex. The two winners in the semifinals will meet Sunday at 1:00 for the CAA Championship.
