Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) scored a golden goal with 1:35 left in double overtime as the Old Dominion men's soccer team defeated #19 Virginia Commonwealth 1-0 Friday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action.
VCU commited a foul in the box and Vendegh, the CAA's leading scorer converted the penalty kick to give the Monarchs their third win over a ranked opponent this season. They are now 6-1-1 in the conference and 9-6-1 overall. The Rams fall to 4-1-1 and 10-4-1. With the victory ODU now leads VCU by six points in the CAA
Neither team could find the back of the net through regulation and most of two overtimes as both goalies, ODU's Sam Cameron (Raleigh, NC) and VCU's Saul Montero, made four stops each. The Rams outshot the Monarchs 17-14 on the night and held a 10-0 corner kick advantage.
With Sunday's game against Penn State cancelled, ODU will conclude the regular season next Saturday at William and Mary at 7:00 p.m.
