PRINCETON, NJ -- The fourth ranked Old Dominion field hockey squad won its fifth straight game as they defeated #14 Princeton, 4-1, in New Jersey this afternoon. The Lady Monarchs improve to 10-2 overall, while the Tigers fall to 4-4 overall.
The game was a rematch of the two teams that appeared in last year's NCAA Tournament quarterfinal in which a late Princeton goal in the second half advanced the Tigers to the Final Four. Old Dominion's victory snapped a two-game losing streak to Princeton, which had also captured a 2-1 win in 2001 during the regular season.
Senior Becky Loy (Loysville, PA) led Old Dominion with two goals, including the game-winner. Sister Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) and CAA Player of the Week Tiffany Snow (Escondido, CA) also scored in the winning effort. Senior Katie Moyer (Va. Beach, VA) recorded a goal and an assist.
Becky Loy opened up scoring with the first of her two goals with 17:47 remaining in the first stanza, as Old Dominion took a 1-0 lead into the half.
The Lady Monarchs made it a 2-0 game early in the second period as Loy posted her second goal of the game on a pass from Tara Herrmann (Perkasie, PA) less than four minutes into the second half. Princeton pulled within one on a goal by senior Ilvy Friebe with 21 minutes remaining, but it would be as close as the Tigers would get. The Lady Monarch defense produced three defensive saves and senior goalkeeper Marybeth Freeman (Holland, PA) swatted away a penalty stroke attempt by Natalie Martirosian.
The Lady Monarchs reclaimed the two-goal margin just 25 seconds after Princeton scored on a goal by Angie Loy with the assist coming from rookie Janelle Engle (Mt. Joy, PA). Snow, on a pass from Moyer, added in an insurance goal with 17:33 on the clock on her team-leading 16th goal of the year.
The Tigers outshot and outcornered the Lady Monarchs 18-13 and 14-11 respectively. Freeman made a season-high 12 saves in net for Old Dominion. Princeton's Kelly Saril stopped nine Old Dominion shots on net.
The Old Dominion field hockey team will return to action tomorrow when they face the #17 Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens at Rullo Stadium in Newark, DE. It will be the Lady Monarchs' fifth CAA match-up of the season, while Delaware will be playing its first CAA contest since joining the league last winter. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
