Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) scored two first half goals to lead the Old Dominion men's soccer team to a 3-2 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) victory over visiting #24 Hofstra University on Friday night.
Vendegh's first goal came at the 16:33 mark as he controlled a loose ball and dribbled through several Hofstra defenders and fired a high shot past goalie Matthias Gumbrecht. That goal tied the game at one as Paul Saccocio netted the first goal of the contest nine minutes in for Hofstra. Saccocio put the goal in with a bicycle kick just five feet out.
Vendegh and Ben Cummins (Queensland, Australia) would each add a score before the half to put ODU up 3-1 going into the break. That would be all the scoring the Monarchs would need as the Pride could only answer with one goal in the second period. Jochen Strobel added the goal for Hofstra after he collected a loose ball at midfield and drove down and scored.
With the win the Monarchs move their conference record to 4-1-0 and 7-6-0 overall while the Pride fall to 3-2-0 CAA and 9-4-1 overall. This is ODU's second victory over a ranked opponent in six tries, including a 3-2 OT victory over then 12th ranked American.
Old Dominion will be back in action tomorrow to host CAA foe Drexel at 7:00 p.m. at the ODU Soccer Stadium.
