Monarchs Tennis Results From Opening Day of East Coast Championships

NORFOLK, VA -- Junior Zoltan Csanadi (Timisoara, Romania) advanced to the quarterfinals of the Flight A men's singles bracket as he looks to defend his singles title at the East Coast Championships hosted by Old Dominion.

Csanadi, the top seed in the Flight A bracket, received an opening round of 32 bye and used a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Tim Bainton of CAA rival George Mason to advance to the quarterfinal round. He will face Jiri Beranke of Campbell who will be playing in his first match of the tournament. Beranke also received an opening round of 32 bye, but advanced to the quarterfinals after Lees McRae's Shane Horman pulled out of the singles bracket with an injury.

Second seeded Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) also advanced to the quarterfinals of the Flight A men's singles bracket. Following his opening round of 32 bye, van der Merwe defeated Tito Ballester of CAA rival George Mason, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. His next opponent will be another CAA opponent in Nikola Djordejevic of Hofstra. Djordejevic reached the quarterfinals with wins over Delaware's John Tully (6-3, 6-2) and Lees McRae's Andres Intriago (6-1, 6-2).

Junior Calin Milos (Timisoara, Romania) also saw action in the Flight A men's singles bracket. After an round of 32 victory over Uconn's Mike Furman 6-0, 6-3, he fell 6-4, 6-1 to Josef Novotny of UMBC in the round of 16.

Other Monarchs participating in the tournament this weekend included junior Niklas Oskarsson (Halmstad, Sweden), senior Salman Mohammed (Calcutta, India), and senior Patrik Binkowski (Orby, Sweden) in the Flight B men's singles bracket who all advanced to the quarterfinals. Oskarsson defeated Howard's Kenneth Brown (6-2, 6-1) and Richmond's Dan Scrafford (6-0, 6-4) in his first two matches, Mohammed posted a win over Lees McRae's Felipe Castanheira (6-3, 6-2) after an opening round bye, and Binkowsi used a 6-3, 6-3 win over UMBC's James Tyler and a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Richmond's Matt Cabana to advance. Oskarsson will face Campbell's Zorick Toltsan, while Mohammed will challenge Maryland's David Reichsfeld and Binkowski takes on Maryland's Scott Peters in the quarterfinals.

Freshman Adriano Mello (Loudrina, Brazil) won his opening round with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Delaware's Dustin Lewis in the Flight C singles bracket. However, Mello was stopped in the round of 16 with a 6-3, 6-4 defeat against Virginia's Darrin Cohen.
