NORFOLK, VA -- The top two scorers in the nation, junior Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) and senior Tiffany Snow (Escondido, CA) teamed up to lead the third ranked Old Dominion Lady Monarchs to a 1-0 shutout over the number one team in the country, the University of Maryland, this afternoon on Foreman Field. The Lady Monarchs win their eighth straight contest to improve to 13-2 overall, while the Terps suffered just their second loss of the year and fall to 14-2 overall.

The game featured one the top rivalries in collegiate field hockey. The Lady Monarchs were able to avenge an earlier 2-0 loss to the Terps up in College Park, MD back in September.

After a scoreless first half of play, the Lady Monarchs were awarded a penalty corner just two minutes into the second half. Loy inserted the ball to junior Melissa Leonetti (Erdenhiem, PA) for the stick stop. Snow then hit the ball to the left side of the cage where Loy was waiting for the tip in.

Senior netminder Marybeth Freeman (Holland, PA) helped the Lady Monarchs to their seventh shutout of the year. She stopped four Terp shots on net, including a shot by sophomore Colleen Barbieri (Centerreach, NY) on a penalty late in the second half to preserve the win. Maryland keeper Kerry Hearsey (Leicester, England) made four saves on the afternoon.

2001 ACC Rookie of the Year Barbieri and senior Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, PA) led Maryland with two shots apiece. However, the Terps were outshot overall by Old Dominion, 8-7. Maryland did outcorner the Lady Monarchs though, 5-4.

With the assist, Snow needs just one more point to place her name on the all-time ODU points leaders list. One more point will give the Escondido, CA native 158 career points tying her 10th position with former Lady Monarch and Honda Award winner Mimi Smith (1995-98).

The Lady Monarchs return to action tomorrow as they wrap up Colonial Athletic Association Conference play. Old Dominion hosts Drexel at Foreman Field at 1:00 p.m. A victory will clinch Foreman Field as the host site of the 2002 CAA Championships.
