WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- Three members of the Old Dominion women's tennis team participated in first day of competition at the 10th annual William and Mary Invitation on Saturday. Eleventh ranked Nataly Cahana (Qiriat Bialik, Israel), the highest ranked player in the tournament, led the way with two wins to advance to the semi-finals of the "William" singles flight.
Cahana, the 2002 CAA Co-Player of the Year, won both her matches convincingly in straight sets. She opened play with a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the round of 16 over #45 Kavitha Krishnamurth of Princeton and then followed with a quarterfinal victory over #80 Valeri Vladea of Minnesotra, 6-2, 6-1.
Senior Julia Sotiriu (Wendelstein, Germany) dropped her round of 16 match in the "Gold" singles flight a 6-3, 7-6 (3) loss to Abby Smith of Miami. In the consolation round, she fell to Maryland's Jennifer Dent in three sets, 0-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Rookie Coralie Herrmann (Porrentruy, Switzerland) began her first appearance as a Lady Monarch by blanking Jessica Barki of Illinois, 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round of the "Tribe" singles flight. However, she dropped a three set decision to Andrea Fusea of Maryland, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
