The Old Dominion men's soccer team lost 2-1 to #22 Wake Forest on Saturday night before a loud crowd of 562, as the Deamon Deacons score two goals just minutes apart in the second half for the win.
The Monarchs opened the scoring in the 60th minute with a successful penalty kick after the game went scoreless into halftime. Attila Vendegh (Bratislave, Slovakia) made the successful penalty kick for his first goal of the season after a Wake handball penalty was called. However, the lead would be short lived as the Deacons would make a successful penalty shot of their own just 30 seconds later. Scott Sealy netted that tying goal before Vincente Bastidas would head in a cornerkick just 1:97 later at 62:47.
The header by Bastidas would end up being the game winniner as goalie William Hesmer and the Wake defense would hold off several late Monarch charges. ODU goalkeeper John Connelly (Rockville, MD) got the start and made nine saves helping to keep his team in the game. The Deacons (2-1-0) controlled the game in the first half firing off 11 shots while keeping ODU from getting one off.
Old Dominion will again be home next weekend to host the annual ODU Stihl Soccer Classic. Georgia State, Coastal Carolina, and CAA foe William and Mary will be in town for one of the most prestigious tournaments in the country. The action begins on Friday at 4:30 and continues Sunday at noon.
