Junior Diane Baucom (Va. Beach, VA) scored two goals as the Old Dominion women's soccer team defeated the University of Maryland-Baltimore County 5-2 Friday night in non-conference action.

The Lady Monarch offense, which went without a goal in the season opener against UNC-Greensboro, was able to beat the Retriever defense for five goals and get their first victory on the young 2002 season. Baucom got things going in 17th minute when freshman Heather Vaughan (Va. Beach, VA) sent a pass through the middle to an open Baucom who corralled the ball and fired a shot over goalie Robin Babaris. Defender Shibaughn Stevens (Penfield, NY) netted a goal of her own just minutes later when her bicycle kick deflected off a defender right to freshman Danielle Heusser (Hummelstown, PA) who was able to get the ball back to Stevens for the score. Those goals would hold up until halftime as the first period ended with ODU up 2-0

The Retrievers struck back early in the second period when Jessa Karko took a corner from Kim Sawyer and headed it in at the 49:30 mark. However, the Lady Monarchs would quickly find an answer when another freshman, Laura Beeman (Chalfont, PA) broke free with the ball after a long pass and scored what would end up being the game-winner. Baucom and teammate Ashley Kramer (Jefferson Hills, PA) would add two more tallies for Old Dominion before UMBC would get one more, by Milana Ward, with just seconds on the clock.

Junior transfer Kristen Bailey (Hamilton, VA) worked a perfect first period making two saves. The Lady Monarchs held a 20-8 shot advantage while the Retrievers had 3 corner kicks to ODU's two. The last time ODU scored five or more goals in a match was a 6-1 victory over Mercer in the fall of 2000.

Old Dominion (1-1/0-1) starts the road portion of their campaign this week as they travel to Campbell for a 7 p.m. matchup on Tuesday before heading to Rutgers next weekend for the annual Rutgers Tournament. There they will face St. Johns on Friday and Rutgers on Sunday.
