The Old Dominion women's soccer team was defeated by UNC-Greensboro 1-0 on Saturday in the season opener, despite eight saves by goaltender Stephanie Miller (Plymouth Meeting, PA).
Miller kept the Lady Monarchs in the game with several key stops despite the rainy conditions. However, the Spartans broke up a scoreless game just four minutes into the second half on a goal by Cara Hammond. Hammond knocked in a tally when a shot slid off the left post over Miller to her on the right side.
Both teams had several chances in the first half but sent errant attempts over an open goal. ODU, who outshot UNCG 14-13, pressed hard offensively throughout the match but couldn't find a tally. Angie Rudy made six saves on her way to earning the shutout for UNC-Greensboro.
The Lady Monarchs (0-1/0-0) will be back in action this Friday as they welcome the University of Maryland-Baltimore County to the ODU Soccer Stadium for a game at 7:00 p.m.
