Both Old Dominion soccer programs will open the 2002 regular season this weekend with home matches. The men face Va. Tech at 7 p.m. on Friday while the Lady Monarchs will take on UNC-Greensboro on Saturday, also at 7 p.m. Both squads enter the regular season after going 1-1 in the preseason.
The Monarchs defeated Campbell 1-0 in overtime before falling to Navy 2-1 last Friday. Junior Michael Tooley (Richmond, VA) provided both goals for ODU with Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) assisting on each. Goalie Samuel Cameron (Raliegh, NC) played well in the cage making 5 saves while splitting time in goal with John Connelly (Rockville, MD).
ODU heads into the contest with the Hokies with an all-time record of 4-1-3 against Va. Tech. The Monarchs defeated their state rivals 4-3 in their last meeting in 2000.
The Lady Monarchs were victorious over East Carolina 3-0 before losing to N.C. State 1-0. Laura Beeman (Chalfont, PA), Heather Vaughan (Va. Beach, VA), and Meredith Worsley (Durham, NC), three of the ODU newcomers, each scored a goal against ECU while goalies Stephanie Miller (Plymouth Meeting, PA) and Kristen Bailey (Hamilton, VA) combined to only allow one goal in the two matches.
The Old Dominion women have gotten the best of UNC-Greensboro in two games against only one loss. That loss came last year in the season opener in Greensboro, a defensive 1-0 affair.
