NORFOLK, VA- Sophomore forward Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) scored three goals tonight, including one in overtime, to lead the Old Dominion men's soccer squad to a 3-2 overtime victory against Syracuse, in the 26 annual Stihl Soccer Classic. The Orangemen fall to 2-2 on the season while ODU rises to 1-3.
Syracuse got on the board first, as their lone shot of the first half was good for a goal at the 32nd minute mark. ODU's Vendegh answered ten minutes later, and the two teams went into the locker room tied 1-1.
The Orangemen took the lead once again in the second half, as Jarett Park put in a direct kick from teammate Darren Ingles. Vendegh scored the equalizer minutes later off an assist from Kevon Harris (Kingston, Jamaica), but neither team could find the game-winner in the closing moments of regulation.
Four and one half minutes into overtime Vendegh finally ended the affair, taking a long pass and beating Syracuse goalie Anthony Peters on a breakaway.
The three-goal outburst was Vendegh's second career hat-trick, and he now has a team-leading seven goals and one assist for 15 points.
The Monarchs outshot SU 16-4, including 10-3 in the second half. Orangemen goalie Anthony Peters made 6 saves on the night.
Old Dominion will return to action on Monday night, when they host High Point at 7 p.m.
