NORFOLK, VA. - Old Dominion University's Sally Barkow (Nashotah, WI.)and Brad Funk (Harbor Bluffs, Fl.) are the women's and men's leaders after today's racing in the ICSA/Vanguard Singlehanded North American Sailing Championships at Old Dominion. There will be five more races Sunday beginning at 9:45 a.m.
In 11 races today, Barkow (42 pts) took five firsts, and second in three leading, Amanda Clark (46 pts) of Connecticut College by four points in the women's championships. In third is Ali Sharp from St. Mary's College with 48 points, just six points behind Barkow. Defending champion Margaret Gill of Harvard moved up to sixth.
Funk (35 pts) took first in three of his last four races to overtake David Wright (43 pts) of Kings Point for an eight point lead. Harvard's Clay Bischoff is in third with 45 points, just two points behind Wright.
Old Dominion has won 11 sailing championships since 1982. The lastMonarch to win a singlehanded title was John Torgerson in 1996-97.
