Norfolk, VA-The Old Dominion soccer squad picked up their sixth win in a row and second conference victory tonight by defeating #21William & Mary, 3-2 in double overtime. Old Dominion is now 6-3 overall, 2-0 CAA. The Tribe slips to 5-5-1, 0-1 CAA.
The Monarchs took an early lead on a Michael Tooley (Richmond, VA) goal just over seven minutes into the match, when the sophomore put in a deflected shot from teammate Chad Denton (Va. Beach, VA). Old Dominion stretched the lead after the half, when freshman Kevon Harris (Kingston, Jamaica) sent in a long cross to sophomore Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia), whose diving header made it 2-0 in favor of ODU.
The Tribe didn't fold under the two goal deficit. Forward Phil Hucles beat Monarch goalie Chad Calderone (Rockville Centre, NY) on a breakaway at the 78 minute mark, and teammate Justin Smiley put home the equalizer with just 1:38 left to play in the game.
After fighting through one overtime session, the Monarchs finally put the game away minutes into the second sudden-death period. Senior midfielder Carlos Mendes (Mineola, NY) took a long cross from Vendegh and beat Tribe keeper Billy Platz for the winning score.
ODU goalie Chad Calderone was crucial to the Monarchs' success this evening. The junior made nine saves on the evening, including several in the closing minutes of the second half and overtime.
With his one goal and one assist tonight, Vendegh is now the seventh highest scorer in ODU history after just one and a half seasons. The sophomore scoring ace is tied for sixth all-time in goals and currently has 11 scores and five assists so far in 2001.
Old Dominion will return to action on Saturday, October 13, when they travel to Wake Forest.
