Sept. 22, 2001
Norfolk, VA-The Old Dominion men's soccer team defeated visiting American this evening, 2-0. The Monarchs are now 3-3 while American falls to 2-3 on the season.
Senior midfielder Carlos Mendes (Mineola, NY) got things rolling for the Monarchs in the first half when he sent a long ball from deep in the American corner to teammate Michael Tooley (Richmond, VA), who knocked in a header past Eagle goalie Michael Behonick. It was one of only two shots on goal that ODU put up in the first half, the two teams had four shots between them before halftime.
The second half went much like the first. Tough, physical play punctuated the game, and it wasn't until the 70 minute mark that ODU finally got some breathing space. Sophomore forward Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) broke through the AU defense, netting his 10th goal of the season to put the Monarchs ahead for good.
Old Dominion held a 9-5 advantage in shots on the evening, while the Eagles had a 5-1 advantage in corners.
The Monarchs will return to action on Saturday, September 29 when they travel to CAA foe George Mason.
