Allison Greene, an assistant women's basketball coach at Old Dominion University for the past 10 years, has resigned from her position to complete her doctoral dissertation degree in International Studies, as announced today by head coach Wendy Larry.
Greene joined the Lady Monarch coaching staff in 1991 and quickly became known as one of the premier recruiters of international student-athletes. Among Greene's recruits were All-Americans Ticha Penicheiro, Clarisse Machanguana, Mery Andrade, Lucienne Berthieu and Hamchetou Maiga. Her most recent signing, junior college Player of the Year Evelina "Max" Nhassengo of Mozambique, will join the team next season.
"Allison's loyalty and commitment to the Lady Monarch basketball program, the University, and the Hampton Roads community will be sorely missed," says Larry. "Her expertise and vision in international recruiting will be difficult to ever replace. We wish her continued success in her pursuit of her doctoral degree and in all her future endeavors."
During Greene's 10 seasons with Old Dominion, the Lady Monarchs compiled a 264-57 overall record (129-7 CAA), winning 10 consecutive CAA championships and appearing in five NCAA Sweet Sixteens, including the 1997 national championship game.
"I have spent the last decade of my life at Old Dominion University as both a coach and a student. Pursuing a doctorate has been a life-long goal of mine and it is a dissertation away from completion," says Greene. "Because coaching is very demanding from a time standpoint, it has limited my progress in this final stage."
"My decision to leave is one that was not made overnight, but has evolved into reality only recently," Greene adds. "Words cannot express what the last 10 years at ODU have meant to me. The University, the program, and the people associated with both have made an indelible impression upon my heart."
A 1990 graduate of Dartmouth, Greene was a two-sport athlete in basketball and track and field. Following her graduation she played professional basketball in Portugal for one year.
