McCullums Jumper with 2.2 Seconds Sends Game to Extra Frame

RICHMOND, Va. (March 3, 2001) - Second Team All-CAA selection Andre McCullums shot with 2.2 seconds left in regulation sent the opening game of the CAA Ukrops/First Market Bank Mens Basketball Tournament into overtime and then the #5 seed Old Dominion proceeded to outscore #4 seed William & Mary 6-0 in overtime to advance to the semifinals with a 53-47 victory.

ODU, which scored all six overtime points on free throws, was led by Ricardo Marchs 17 points and nine rebounds while Michael Williams added 10. McCullum finished with 11 points. W&M, which has not advanced past the opening round since 1997, was led by Sherman Rivers 14 point-11 rebound performance while Second Team All-CAA selection Jim Moran had a double-double output himself with 11 points and 11 boards. Adam Duggins added nine points and eight rebounds.

W&M had trailed for most of the game but came back in the second half as Duggins scored seven straight points to bring the Tribe within a point, 35-34. The game then went back and forth with neither team going up by more than three points for the duration of regulation. The Tribe took a slight two-point lead after Cody Carbaughs layup with :16 seconds left put W&M up, 47-45. That set the stage for McCullums free-throw line jumper.

W&M outrebounded the Monarchs 49-37.

ODU will face #1 seed UNC Wilmington at 1:00pm on Sunday in a semifinal matchup.
