Warren Spivey Named Bud Metheny Award Winner

NORFOLK, Va. -- Warren Spivey, who through his kind assistance and love for the game of baseball at all levels, has greatly helped area youth is the 24th recipient of the Bud Metheny Award. He will be honored at the ACS Systems "Meet the Stars" banquet at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel, Jan. 26th.

The banquet, which begins at 6:30 p.m. is part of the 24th annual Greenwich Kitchens/ Old Dominion University Baseball Clinic weekend, which culminates on Saturday, Jan. 27 with the clinic at the Old Dominion University field house at 9:00 a.m. Tickets for the banquet are $50 per person, while clinic tickets are $5. Hall of Fame home run hitter Harmon Killebrew will be the keynote speaker at the banquet and clinic. Tickets for the banquet and clinic can be purchased at the Old Dominion University athletic ticket office, at 683-4444.

Spivey has been a vital contributor to area little leagues. He has supported the Bennett's Creek Little League with a new infield turf for their baseball field, and made needed renovations to the John Yeates Middle School baseball field. Spivey helped lay out and installed the fence for that field. He has helped sponsor many individuals who did not have enough money to travel with teams as well as purchase uniforms for teams in need.

Warren has been instrumental in building the baseball facility at Nansemond River High School and helped spearhead the installation of the lighting system, concession stand, press box, scoreboard and locker room areas in that facility.

Spivey has also been a solid supporter of area baseball in South Hampton Roads and Northeast North Carolina. He owns a team in the Coastal Plains Summer Collegiate Baseball League which is based in Manteo, NC. Spivey has hosted and directed numerous baseball tournaments over the years at the high school, American Legion and collegiate levels. He has been a very strong supporter of baseball at Old Dominion University and at Virginia Wesleyan.

"Any award connected to coach Bud Metheny is truly a special honor, " said Spivey. "I love baseball at all levels. It's just fun for me to be a part and help others."

Born in Tunis, NC, Spivey is owner of Spivey Rentals. He currently lives in Suffolk, Va. with wife Lucille. They have two children, son Evan and daughter Heather.
