Three Monarch Alumni To Compete In Upcoming Games

NORFOLK, VA. (Sept. 12) - Old Dominion University will be represented by three alumni at the 2000 Olympic Games in Australia. Macha van der Vaart ('90) in field hockey, Charlie Ogletree ('89) and Todd Hudgins ('92) in sailing.

Macha van der Vaart (Zuid-Scharwoude, The Netherlands) will be on the Dutch Olympic squad. In 1990, she led the Lady Monarchs with 32 goals and five assists in just 26 matches. That year Old Dominion compiled a 23-2-1 record and won their fifth NCAA National title. Van der Vaart scored an NCAA record four goals in the title game as the Lady Monarchs defeated North Carolina, 5-0.

This will be Charlie Ogletree's (Newport Beach, CA.) second trip to the Olympics. He placed eighth at the 1996 games in Atlanta. Ogletree will be competing in the Tornado sail boat class with John Lovell. Ogletree was a 1989 collegiate sailing All-American at Old Dominion.

Todd Hudgins (La Porte, Texas) will be the head coach of the U. S. Virgin Island Olympic sailing team. They will be competing in the FINN Class and Wind Surfer Class. The two-time All-American (1990 & 1991) has been the head sailing coach at Hampton University the last two years. He has taken a position as the Assistant Director of the U.S. Sailing Training Center in Stewart, Fla.

Gary Bodie, who helped start and was the first head coach of the OldDominion UniversitySailing program from 1981-85, is currently the U.S. Olympic Sailing Coachand will bewriting diaries throughout the Olympics in the DAILY PRESS.
