Joining Hummel in the draft was senior lefthander BrianRoss (Portland, ME). He was selected in the 15th roundby the Cincinnati Reds. Ross was 2-4 this year with a2.93 earned run average. He missed almost two months ofthe season when a line drive broke a bone in his leftarm against Virginia Tech. Ross fanned eight againstRutgers and lost, 3-1 to top ranked South Carolina andtheir All-American pitcher Kip Bouknight.
Hummel was the Colonial Athletic Association's Player ofthe Year and Defensive Player of the Year. He is a firstteam All-American selection by BASEBALL WEEKLY and COLLEGIATE BASEBALL.Hummel hit .408 this season with eight home runs and 68 runsbatted in. He ranked second in the CAA in hitting. He alsoknocked in 30 runs in just 21 CAA league games.
Hummel set an Old Dominion single season shortstop fielding record of .963,breaking T.J. O'Donnell's mark .962 in 1992 at the shortstop position. He alsoowns both Old Dominion'sand the CAA's career on base percentage record of .508.
Hummel helped lead the Monarchs to a 33-24-1 record this year. Old Dominionshared first place with East Carolina andearned the CAA's top seed in the conference tournament. TheMonarchs were awarded an atlarge berth to the NCAA Regionalsat Clemson, SC.
Through three years, Hummel has a career .388 battingaverage, with 20 home runs, 185 RBI and 62 doubles.
Last year, Hummel earned All-Star honors in the Cape Cod Summer League.
