Rutgers Outslugs Monarchs, 17-11

NORFOLK, VA. (February 27, 2000) -- Mike Popowski's two-run homer in the top of the fifthinning broke an 8-8 tie and lifted the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers to a 17-11 victory over the Monarchs of Old Dominion University on Feb. 27. Rutgers sweeps the three-game series and improves to 4-2, while the Monarchs drop to 2-8-1.

Jake Daubert went six-for-six with five runs batted in for Rutgers and Popowskiknocked in three runs as the Scarlet Knights pounded out 21 hits and three home runs.

Leading the Monarchs was junior shortstop Tim Hummel (Montgomery, NY.) Whohad two hits and three runs batted in. He hit a two-run homer in the first inning as theMonarchs led 4-2. Freshmen Jesse Thomas (Ventnor, NJ.), John Oehler (Audubon, NJ.) and junior Ross Robertson (Chesapeake, Va.) all knocked in two runs for the Monarchs.

Old Dominion hosts LeMoyne University (from Syracuse, NY) next weekend ina three-game series.
