Capel Signs Two-Year Extension

NORFOLK, VA. (Feb. 25) -- Old Dominion University men's basketball coachJeff Capel has signed a two-year extension to his contract through the 2002basketball season, as announced today byathletic director Jim Jarrett.

The contract guarantees a base salary of$127,000 and additional income from television and radio packages, camps and anannuity.

"I am pleased that Jeff Capel will continue to lead the men's basketball programat Old Dominion University,"says Jarrett. "Jeff is a quality coach and I am optimisticthat he will provide strong and effective leadershiop for the Monarch basketballprogram."

Capel, the CAA Coach-of-the-Year in 1995 and the 1997 state Coach-of-the-Year bythe Virginia Sports Information Directors Association, h as compiled a 109-79record throughfive and a half seasons at Old Dominion, leading the Monarchs to CAA crowns in1995 and 1997. The Monarchs reached the CAA finals last year. In his firstseason (1995), the Monarchs upset No. 3 seeded Villanova in the first round ofthe NCAA tournament, and Capel was honoredas the NABC District III Coach-of-the-Year. Three of Capel's Monarch teams have advanced to post-season play, with last year's team tying a school recordfor wins with25 (25-9) and advancing to the second round of the NIT.

"I am excited about continuing to lead the men's basketballprogram at Old Dominion University," says Capel. "I lookforward to the future, with our strong corp of returningplayers and talented incoming recruits, and to promoting ourprogram to our alumni, fans and supporters throughout Hampton Roads."

Prior to his arrival at Old Dominion, Capel led North Carolna A&T to a 16-14record in 1993-94, an MEAC title and a trip to the NCAA tournament. From1990-1993, he was thehead coach at his alma mater, Fayetteville State, leadingthe Broncos to the NCAA Division II tournament in 1993 witha 20-9 record. He served as an assistant coach at WakeForest from 1986-89, and as head coach and assistant principal at Pinecrest HighSchool in Southern Pines, NC foreight years. Capel was inducted into the FayettevilleState University Hall of Fame last fall.
