Spolidoro Earns Spot on Junior USA Track & Field Team

Greensboro, N.C. -- (Feb. 17) Old Dominion University cross country freshman Julie Spolidoro (Duxbury, Mass.) recently earned a spot on the Junior women's USA Track and Field team with a fifth place finish at the 2000 USA Winter National Cross Country Championships.

The event, held this past weekend at Bryan Park Golf Complex in Greensboro, North Carolina, saw Spolidoro finish the 6K course in fifth place with a time of 22:55 on a course that was covered with standing water and freezing rain. Shalane Flanagan, an unattached runner from Marblehead, Massachusetts, won the event in a time of 21:59.

In Greensboro, more than 500 athletes competed in six championship races for selection to the 2000 International Amateur Athletic Foundation (IAAF) World Cross Country Championships in Vilamoura, Portugal March 18-19, 2000. As one of the top six finishers, Spolidoro will represent the United States in the March event.

Spolidoro, Old Dominion's first All-CAA and All-South Region runner, finished as the highest Lady Monarch in every race she ran this season. The CAA Rookie of the Year, she finished in the top three of six of seven races and won three separate events, running a season-best 17:34.00 at the Colonial Invitational held at William and Mary early in the season.

At the CAA Championships, Spolidoro ran a 17:55 for sixth place overall. Two weekends later, she finished 18th at the NCAA Regionals with a time of 17:53.
