South Carolina Defeats Monarchs, 3-1 In Baseball Opener

CHARLESTON, SC (Feb. 11)-- Tripp Kelly knocked in a pair of runsand Marcus McBeth knocked in another as the Gamecocks ofSouth Carolina defeated Old Dominion, 3-1 in the first round of the CitadelTrademark Classic.

The Monarchs lone run came in the top of the ninthas rightfielder Brent Sollenberger doubled and scored ona double play. Sollenberger had three of the Monarchs sixhits on the day. Pre-season All-American Tim Hummel and, freshman catcher JohnOhler and Ross Robertson each had onehit.

Monarch losing pitcher Brian Ross fanned six batters and allowed only threehits in seven innings of work. TheMonarchs play Maryland in the second round on Saturday at10 a.m. South Carolina is now 3-0.
