ODU Falls to Furman, 68-65, in SoCon Consolation Championship

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) (November 28) -- Junior forward Andre McCullum collected a double-double with 18 points and 16 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Old Dominion fell to Furman, 68-65 in the consolation final of the SoCon Holiday Hoops Tournament.

Freshman forward Karim Souchu of Furman scored agame-high 20 points, including the go-ahead basket with 22 seconds left.

Souchu took a pass from classmate Darrell Arbaugh on a backdoor cut forthe layup that broke a 65-65 deadlock.

After the Monarchs' Skipper Youngblood missed a short baseline jumperwith 13 seconds to go, Furman's Marcus Dilligard hit the second of atwo-shot free throwwith 6.5 seconds to go.

Old Dominion guard Michael Williams took the inbounds pass and raceddown court for a 20-footer from the left wing that fell short.

Arbaugh added 12 and freshman Guilherme Da Luz 10 for the Paladins(4-2). Junior forward Andre McCullum scored 18 and grabbed a game-high16 reboundsfor Old Dominion (2-3). Youngblood added 15 points and Williams 13.

Youngblood forced the late tie by hitting two free throws with 52seconds remaining. The teams traded the lead nine times in the previous12 minutes with neithermoving ahead by more than three.

The Monarchs' last lead was 62-61 on Williams' 3-point shot from theleft baseline with 3:21 left. Furman regained the upper hand at 64-62 ona Dilligard free throwat 2:59 and a Da Luz jumper at 1:56.

A Youngblood free throw at 1:41 - his first point of the second halffollowing a 12-point first half - and an Arbaugh free throw at 1:08 leftthe score at 65-63.

The Monarchs led 40-31 at halftime and took their largest lead at 43-32on Williams' 3-point basket 40 seconds into the second half. ThePaladins responded witha 16-4 run to take a 48-47 lead on a 3-point shot and free throw by P.J.Brown at 13:05.

Furman used a 9-2 run to post an 18-11 lead at the 12-minute mark of thefirst half. The Monarchs immediately went on a 9-1 burst for a 20-19edge two minuteslater. Old Dominion finished the first half with a 14-4 run as Furmanhit only two of its last nine shots of the half. McCullum scored six tolead the charge.
