Old Dominion Defeats Central Florida, 61-57

GREENVILLE, S.C. (Nov. 27)(AP) -- Freddie Bryant hit a 15-footer and sophomorePierre Greene followed with two free throws in the final 40 seconds tolead Old Dominion to a 61-57 victory Saturday over Central Florida.

Tonight's win gave head coach Jeff Capel his 100that Old Dominion. He is the fourth Monarch coach to reachthat plateau at ODU. The other three are Bud Metheny(198), Paul Webb (196) and Sonny Allen (181).

The Monarchs (2-2) advance to the SoCon Holiday Hoops tournamentconsolation final Sunday against Furman, a 77-58 winner over SouthCarolina State on Saturday. The Golden Knights (0-4) will play South Carolina State onSunday.

Bryant's basket helped Old Dominion push ahead to 55-53. After a missby Central Florida's D'Quarius Stewart, Greene's free throws made it59-53.

Stewart came back with a 3-pointer, but Michael Williams advanced thescore with two free throws at 3.8 seconds. The Knights got a final freethrow from Paul Reed.

Williams scored 15 points to lead the Monarchs. Center SkipperYoungblood added 12 points and nine rebounds.

Stewart netted 14 points and Jason Thornton 12 for the Knights.

The Knights rallied from a 48-40 deficit to pull within one at 52-51 onRoy Leath's rebound shot with 6:58 remaining. After Youngblood's freethrow, Central Florida failed to score on three straight possessions, missingthree free throws and a field goal attempt.

The Monarchs got breathing room at 55-51 when Wright dropped in a16-foot baseline shot with 2:47 remaining, but Stewart hit a runningone-hander at 2:25 to make it 55-53 and set the stage for Bryant and Greene.

Old Dominion led 32-29 at halftime after leading by as many as 13 inthe first half. The Knights outscored the Monarchs 14-6 to close out theperiod.
