NORFOLK,VA (Nov. 13,1999) -- Old Dominions mens swimming and diving team won the first eight events of the meet, before swimming exhibition in three of the final four events, to topple Duke University, 138-91, and move to 7-0 on the season.
The Lady Monarchs were defeated in the final event (400 free relay) and lost the heartbreaker, 121-122, dropping to 1-6 on the season.
Monarch swimmer Jimmy Sullivan (West Palm Beach, FL) won the 200 IM (1:57.01) and 1000 free (9:28.96), while senior diver Kevin Harrison (Bethpage, NY) won the one meter (245.70) and three meter (272.17) dives as Old Dominion sprinted out to a 130-33 lead after eight events.
Duke then won the 200 back to break the win streak, but it was too little too late and the Monarchs swam exhibition in the final three events to win the meet.
Freshman swimmer Jamie DAgostino (Ardsley, NY) paced the womens team with victories in the 1000 (10:12.73), 200 (1:56.00) and 500 free (scoring error-no time), while freshman diver Ashley Kirchner (Arlington, VA) swept the diving events.
The Lady Monarchs held a 119-107 lead going into the final event, but third in the 400 free relay while Duke finished first and second to win the meet 122-121.
The Monarchs and Lady Monarchs return to action November 18-20, as the teams participate in the Carolina/Nike Cup Classic at the University of North Carolina.
