NORFOLK, VA (Oct. 8) -- Freshman midfielder Michael Tooley (Richmond, VA)scored in the 69th minute to lift Old Dominion to a 1-0 victory overCAA-rival James Madison in a battle between the two sixth-ranked teams in the South AtlanticRegion.
Old Dominion maintains first place in the CAA with the win, moving to4-0-0, 8-2-0, while JMU falls to 1-2-0, 7-4-1.
In one of the most physical contests of the CAA season, featuringeight yellow cards and three James Madison ejections, Tooley finally broke the scoreless tiewith a 15 yard blast off the left side on an assist by freshman defender Anders Haugom(Gjovik, Norway).
The first half featured a defensive battle as both teams blasted offfive shots but were unable to connect. In the second half, tempers flared as two JamesMadison players and an assistant coach were ejected on red cards, forcing the Dukes toplay two men down after the Monarchs took the 1-0 advantage.
Monarch senior keeper Chuck Connelly (Rockville, MD) collected foursaves to record the sixth Old Dominion shutout of the season and third in arow. The four CAA wins are the most for Old Dominion since 1995 and the eight overallwins tie last season's total.
Old Dominion returns to action on Wednesday, October 13, as theytravel to Williamsburg to take on William and Mary at 7:00 pm.
