NORFOLK, Va. (Sept. 11) The defending national champion Old Dominion fieldhockey team lost its first game of the season, a 5-1 decision against #6Penn State Saturday afternoon at Foreman Field. The #2 Lady Monarchs dropto 4-1 overall (2-0 CAA) while the Lady Lions improve to 3-0 overall (0-0Big Ten).
Sophomore Adrienne Yoder (Coopersburg, Pa.) scored Old Dominion's loangoal with just over five minutes to play in the first half. The goal tiedthe game at one apiece, but the Lady Monarchs could not hold on as PennState netted four goals on four shots in the second half.
Old Dominion pulled goalkeeper Mary Beth Freeman (Holland, Pa.) with12:47 left to play for the player advantage on offense. The strategy didnot work, however, as Penn State's Maegan Galie (Collegeville, Pa.) led theway with two goals and three assists on the afternoon.
The #2 Lady Monarchs will travel south this weekend for two games inNorth Carolina. Old Dominion will take on North Carolina Saturday and DukeSunday.
