In 1993, relief specialist Wayne Gomes was the highest Monarch ever selected in the baseball draft when the Philadelphia Phillies tapped him as their fourth overall pick in the first round. As a freshman, Gomes led the Sun Belt Conference with nine saves and earned first-team Freshman All-America honors. He completed his collegiate career with 16 saves, a 5-3 record and 156 strikeouts in 100 innings. Gomes graduated in 1994 with a degree in leisure studies and is currently in his fourth season with the Phillies.
