Sonja Lund, Ph.D., LPC

Dr. Sonja Lund is the Associate Athletics Director of Student-Athlete Mental Health & Well-being at Old Dominion. Lund joined ODU in July of 2022.

Prior to her role at ODU, she spent three years as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Counseling and Human Services department at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania. Dr. Lund is a three-time ODU graduate who earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Education and Supervision in 2019, MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2015, and BS in Psychology in 2011.

Dr. Lund is passionate about her work with the college athlete population and has over 5 years of experience working with athletes in a clinical setting. Her dissertation compared athletes with ADHD and non-athletes with ADHD on levels of academic adjustment, mental health severity, and complexity of college life concerns. She has presented at various regional, state, national, and international conferences on college athlete mental health issues including the coach-athlete relationship, attitudes towards help-seeking, counseling interventions, and student-athlete diversity considerations.

In 2018 she was recognized as an Emerging Leader by the American College Counseling Association for her work with college athletes and is a member of ACCA’s diversity/inclusion committee. Dr. Lund is co-chair of the Pennsylvania Counseling Association Committee for Anti-Racism and Inclusive Action (CARIA). She also served as president for the Northeast Pennsylvania Counseling Association and provided volunteer career counseling services for Dress for Success Lackawanna in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
