David Burke

David Burke joined Old Dominion University as an assistant coach of the rowing team in 2019.  

Before arriving to Norfolk, Burke spent the previous six seasons serving as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator of the men’s rowing team at Cornell. There he coached the 2nd varsity team to an 8th-place finish at the 2016 IRA National Championship. He also coached four top-five finishers at the Eastern Sprints, including two bronze medal teams, one in 2015 and one in 2016. He also recruited and coached three members of the USA U23 National team (2017, 2018) and one member of the U23 Canadian National team (2018). 

Prior to his stint at Cornell, Burke served as the assistant men’s rowing coach at Northeastern University. He spent five seasons with Northeastern, where he was part of the coaching staff that led their team to a 2nd-place finish at the Eastern Sprints and a 3rd-place finish at the IRA National Championship. 

Burke also has experience coaching women’s rowing, as he has coached junior and senior women’s teams at the West Side Rowing Club and he co-coached the Junior B Women’s 8+ to a gold medal at the Canadian Henley.

Burke attended Northeastern and was a member of the school’s rowing team. He was the recipient of the Charlie Smith Award in 2009 for his dedication to rowing and the Boathouse Award in 2008 for his contribution to NU crew, among others. Burke graduated from Northeastern with a bachelor’s in history and a minor in secondary education.
