NEWARK, DE (September 1) - Old Dominion University scored three goals in aspan of 2:41 midway through the second half to defeat the University ofDelaware, 3-2 in their season opener, Wednesday afternoon.

With the Blue Hens leading, 1-0 on a Rob McLeod goal in the firsthalf, the Monarchs tied the match on a goal by freshman Michael Tooley (Richmond,Va.) with 23 minutes remaining. One minute later senior Spiros Blackburn(Denton, TX.) put the Monarchs ahead on an assist from Martin Crowley(Coventry, England). The Monarchs final goal came 1:21 later by senior Jimmy Tanner(Syracuse, NY.) from sophomore Carlos Mendes (Mineola, NY.), the 1998 CAA Rookie ofthe Year. Delaware's last goal came from Brian Shepanski with six minutesleft.

The Monarchs return home to host Elon on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
