NORFOLK, Va. - Former Lady Monarch basketball All-American and Olympian Medina Dixon will have her jersey retired on Sunday, Jan. 30, prior to Old Dominion's 2 p.m. game against Georgia State at the Ted Constant Center.
Dixon will become just the seventh Lady Monarch to have her jersey retired, joining ODU legends Nancy Lieberman, Inge Nissen, Anne Donovan, Ticha Penicheiro, Clarisse Machanguana and Tracy Claxton.
"Medina is one of the most versatile athletes to ever wear a Lady Monarch uniform," said Old Dominion head coach Wendy Larry. "She had the skills and handles of a point guard at 6-3. She was an incredible scorer, lengthy defender and an uncanny rebounder. This is truly a deserving honor."
Dixon transferred to ODU after her freshman year at South Carolina. During her three years as a Lady Monarch, Dixon helped lead Old Dominion to an 84-14 record and two trips to the NCAA Final Four. In 1983 the Lady Monarchs rolled to a 29-6 record and hosted the Final Four in Norfolk. ODU lost the semi-final game to Louisiana Tech.
As a senior in 1985, Dixon guided Old Dominion to a 31-3 record and the NCAA National Championship. The Lady Monarchs topped Georgia for the title and Dixon was named to the NCAA All-Tournament team.
Dixon, a Boston, Mass. native, was a standout forward for ODU from 1982-85. She completed her career with 1,968 points, 979 rebounds, 417 assists and 277 steals. She ranks seventh all-time at Old Dominion in scoring and rebounding, fourth in steals and fifth in assists.
In 1985 Dixon was named a First Team Kodak All-American and was chosen as the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year. She was also selected a Naismith and Fast Break All-American.
Additionally, Dixon was a member of the 1992 USA Olympic Women's Basketball Team that captured the bronze medal and a member of the Pan American Team in 1991.
