NORFOLK, Va. -- Another challenging schedule awaits the Old Dominion women's basketball team in 2007-08. The Lady Monarch schedule features 10 teams that advanced to last year's NCAA Tournament, including national champion Tennessee and perennial powerhouse Connecticut, along with three WNIT participants, and a shot at their 17th straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title.
"Murder's row," commented head coach Wendy Larry, who enters her 21st season at the helm of the Lady Monarch program, on her team's upcoming schedule. "We will be well tested come conference time."
The exhibition portion of the schedule gets under way on Friday, October 26th with the annual Blue-White scrimmage followed by a meeting with Shaw University on Thursday, November 1st and Athletes in Action on Tuesday, November 6th.
The regular season kicks off against Middle Tennessee on Saturday, November 10th. The Blue Raiders, who reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, will be the first of five non-conference opponents to come to the Ted Constant Convocation Center and serve as the Lady Monarchs' opponent for homecoming. Other home opponents include Charlotte on Saturday, November 17th, Penn State on Thursday, November 29th, Michigan State on Sunday, December 2nd, and Delaware State on Thursday, December 20th. The Lady Monarchs host the 49ers, who reached the second round of the WNIT, after traveling the last two seasons to Charlotte. It will be ODU's first-ever meeting with Michigan State, who reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament falling to national runner-up Rutgers. The Lady Lions and Lady Monarchs meet for the seventh straight season, while the DSU Hornets, another NCAA Tournament participant and conference champion, come to Norfolk for the second straight year.
Also included on this year's schedule is the US Virgin Islands Paradise Jam at the University of the Virgin Islands in St. Thomas over Thanksgiving weekend with Old Dominion participating in a bracket that features some of the top teams in the nation. Included in the Lady Monarchs' "Island Division" of the St. Thomas bracket are games with Connecticut on Friday, October 23rd and Stanford on Saturday, November 24th. Old Dominion has not seen the Huskies since their Elite Eight appearance in 2002 and will match-up with the Cardinal for the first time since the magical run to the national championship game in 1997. A third game is slated for the Virgin Islands trip against a team featured on the other side of the bracket in the "Reef Division". The Lady Monarchs will take on either Duke, Purdue, or Temple on Sunday, November 25th.
Other road trips this season include a date with East Carolina on Tuesday, November 13th, the annual meeting with Tennessee on Wednesday, December 5th, Kentucky on Friday, December 28th, and Vanderbilt to close out non-conference action on Sunday, December 30th. East Carolina and Vanderbilt, along with Tennessee, all had post-season action in March. The Pirates won the Conference-USA title a season ago and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the inaugural tournament in 1982, while the Commodores reached the second round.
CAA action gets under way right after the New Year with the Lady Monarchs traveling to Georgia State on Sunday, January 6th. The conference is coming off its most successful season in history with four teams making postseason play with three NCAA bound (ODU, James Madison, & Delaware) and Hofstra advancing to the Elite Eight of the WNIT. All four teams made regular appearances in the national polls last season. The CAA will return six of last season's top 10 scorers, six of the top 10 rebounders, seven of the top 11 assist leaders, and four of the top five leaders in steals. CAA teams will also welcome back 67 percent of their starters from a year ago, including seven student-athletes who earned all-conference honors.
Other conference road games include UNC-Wilmington on Thursday, January 10th, William & Mary on Sunday, January 20th, Northeastern on Thursday, January 24th, Delaware on Sunday, January 27th, George Mason on Thursday, February 7th, Towson on Sunday, February 17th, Virginia Commonwealth on Thursday, February 21st, and James Madison on Sunday, March 2nd.
There will be nine CAA games coming to the Constant Center this winter. CAA runner-up James Madison will be the first conference opponent of the new season on Sunday, January 13th with the schedule also including Virginia Commonwealth on Thursday, January 17th, Georgia Sate on Thursday, January 31st, UNC-Wilmington on Sunday, February 3rd, William & Mary on Sunday, February 10th in the annual "Hoops For A Cure" game, Northeastern on Thursday, February 14th, Drexel on Sunday, February 24th, George Mason on Sunday, February 28th, and the regular season coming to a close on Senior Day on Thursday, March 6th against Hofstra.
The Lady Monarchs begin their quest to bring home an unprecedented 17th straight league title at the 2008 Aeropostale CAA Women's Basketball Championship March 13th-16th at the Bob Carpenter Center on the campus of the University of Delaware.
The Old Dominion women's basketball team returns eight letterwinners from last year's 24-9 squad, including starters in two-time CAA Tournament MVP and three-point recorder holder T.J. Jordan (Portsmouth, Va.) and 2005 CAA All-Rookie Team member and leading rebounder Tiffany Green (Chesapeake, Va.). The Lady Monarchs will also add six newcomers to the mix including redshirt freshman Vicki Collier (Upper Marlboro, Md.) along with Sierra Little (Greensboro, N.C.), Alena Voronia (Yekaterinberg, Russia), Shadasia Green (Patterson, N.J.), and Jasmine Parker (Norfolk, Va.), along with junior college transfer Dawn Coleman (Queens. N.Y.).
