NORFOLK, Va. -- The CAA Champion Old Dominion men's soccer team will host an NCAA Tournament game for the sixth straight season this Saturday night as they entertain the Providence Friars at 7:00 pm. The Friars received an at-large bid into the tournament after going 9-7-2 overall and 5-4-2 in Big East action this season. The Monarchs earned the CAA's automatic berth into the tournament by winning its first CAA Title since 1991, after going 12-6-3 on the season. "We're very excited to be playing at home," said head coach Alan Dawson. "At this point in the season, every team is a talented team and we look forward to playing Providence here on Saturday."
At the CAA Tournament, ODU advanced in the semi's with a 2-1 win over VCU with goals from Stig Haddal and A.J. Kulp. They then battled to a scoreless tie with Towson in the championship game and advanced with a 4-2 shootout victory. It will be the Monarchs sixth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.
The Friars earned an at-large bid as they make an appearance in their third straight NCAA Tournament. They were bounced in the first round last season by Hofstra, a CAA team.
Head coach of the Monarchs is Alan Dawson. He is the winningest coach in Monarch soccer history and has earned four CAA Coach of the Year awards. Head coach of the Friars is Chaka Daley, in his eighth year at the helm for Providence has inserted the Friars into national prominence over the last few seasons.
Kick-off is set for 7:00 pm on Saturday, November 24. Admission for the first round matchup is $7 for adults and $5 for children. A limited number of ODU students will be admitted free with a valid student I.D. The winner of the game will face the #6 seeded Brown University Bears in Rhode Island.
