NORFOLK, VA-- Fans can get their first look at the 2006 Soccer Monarchswhen they host American University Saturday at 6 p.m. at the ODU SoccerStadium. ODU is pre-season No.20 by College Soccer News, and the CAAcoaches picked the Monarchs as the favorites to win the league.
Leading the Monarch returnees are first team All-CAA senior midfielderEdson Elcock, second team All-CAA junior defender David Horst,sophomore midfielder Trevor Banks, the 2005 Rookie of the Year, and Yomby William,a member of the CAA All-Rookie team.
ODU will also debut newcomers: Sean Sigrist (GK, Wautwatosa, WI.),Alex Silver (MF, Montclair, VA.), Steffen Sommerstad (F,Norway),Amir Shihata (MF, Va. Beach, VA.), Zachary Waters (MF, Stafford, VA.),Zachary Kinney (F, Portland, TX), Dylan Montambo (MF/D, Chesapeake, VA.),Evan Newton, (GK, Virginia Beach, VA.), Ambane Emmanuel (F, Cameroon), andNane Fils (MF, Cameroon).
American University Eagles, Members of the Patriot League are coached by Todd West. AU was 7-10-1 overall and 5-2, tied for first in the league.The Eagles return there top four scorers from a year ago which includeGarth Juckem (6 gls, 5 ast), Larry Mark (5 gls, 4 ast) and Sal Cacavale(4 gls, 4ast).
ODU travels to Virginia Tech next weekend for an exhibition contestbefore hosting defending NCAA Champion Maryland on Aug. 25th in thehome and season opener.
