NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University senior forward Brian Cvilikas (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) was named the 2005 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division State Player of the Year this week. Alan Dawson of Old Dominion was named the State Coach of the Year.
Cvilikas was Second Team All-America by College Soccer News and Third Team All-America by the NSCAA. Cvilikas was the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year. He started 20 matches and led the CAA with 15 goals and 30 points. Cvilikas was twice named a National Player of the Week, along with being honored as a second-team Al-American by College Soccer News.
Dawson led the Monarchs to a 15-4-2 overall record and a 9-1-1 mark in the CAA to claim the league's regular-season title. ODU lost 2-1 to Wake Forest in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Monarchs finished the season ranked ninth by Soccer America. ODU was the No. 10 seed in the NCAA Tournament, its best seed in school history. Dawson has led the Monarchs to four straight appearances in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Joining Cvilikas on the 1st team was defender Trevor McEachron (Woodbridge, VA). McEachron, named to the All-CAA First Team for the third time in his career, made a comeback from seven knee operations to be one of the anchors of a Monarch defense that posted 12 shutouts in 21 contests. McEachron was named to the NSCAA All-South Atlantic team for the third time in his ODU career.
Goalkeeper John Connelly (Rockville, MD) was also named to the VaSID second team after earning 12 shutouts in 21 contests and posting a 0.67 goals against average. Connelly also earned National Team of the Week honors this season.
