NORFOLK, VA--The Old Dominion University Soccer Monarchs (13-5-2)travel to Chapel Hill, NC to take on 14th seed North Carolina (11-5-3) Wednesdaynight at Fetzer Field in the NCAA College Cup second round. It is ODU's fifthstraight second round match. Game time is 7 p.m.
The Monarchs advanced to this point on penalty kicks (4-3) last Saturdayagainst Winthrop.
This is North Carolina's record eighth appearance in the NCAA tournament.the Tar Heels have a balanced scoring attack with eight different players scoringatleast two goals and nine different with atleast two assists. Forward Ben Hunterleads the team with four goals and five assists. UNC's defense is led by All-ACC defenders Andre Sheppard and Michael Harrington along with keeper Justin Hugheshave registered eight shutouts this season.
The Monarchs are led by senior forward Edson Elcock (Brooklyn, NY.) with11 goals and six assists. He leads the CAA in both goals and total points with 28. Elcockand senior midfielder Jared Kent (Marietta, GA.) are second in the CAA in assists with six. The CAA Defender of the Year, junior David Horst (Pine Grove, PA.) and freshman keeper Evan Newton(Virginia Beach, VA.) anchor ODU's defense. Newton is second in the CAA in shutouts with seven and has a 0.97 goals against average which ranks fourth in the league.
This is the tenth meeting between the two schools, with UNC leading, 5-3-1.ODU beat the Tar Heels, 3-2 in 2004 in Norfolk, and lost last year, 2-1 in ChapelHill.The winner of Wednesday's match will advance to face the winner between No.3 seed SMU and UC Santa Barbara either Saturday or Sunday.
