#6 Soccer Monarchs Kick Off CAA Action This Weekend

Sept. 30, 2005

WILMINGTON, NC--The 6th ranked Old Dominion University Soccer Monarchs begin their slate of Colonial Athletic Association matchups Friday night as they travel to take on the Seahawks of UNC-Wilmington. On Sunday afternoon, the Monarchs will host new CAA addition Georgia State at the ODU Soccer Stadium. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.

Last week, ODU defeated then #4 Virginia 3-0, and shut out then #20 Davidson 3-0 on the road to up their record to 5-1-1 on the season, including a 2-1-1 mark against ACC teams. By virtue of the back-to-back shutouts, the Monarchs entered the top-10 in two national polls. ODU is ranked 6th by the NSCAA/adidas coaches' poll, and 10th by Soccer America. Senior forward Brian Cvilikas (Highlands Ranch, CO) scored two goals apiece against UVA and Davidson, and picked up some individual recognition as a result. Cvilikas was named College Soccer News National Player of the Week, Soccer America National Player of the Week, and CAA Player of the Week for his four-goal outburst. He leads the CAA in goals (7), and ranks 4th in the nation in goals per game.

After spending some time nationally ranked, UNCW has cooled off a bit after a 5-1 start, losing their previous two contests to Campbell and South Carolina. ODU is 9-4 all-time against the Seahawks, last defeating UNCW 5-0 in 2002. Wilmington is led by senior forward Sam Leger who has tallied six goals and 12 points on the season.

Georgia State (2-5) is one of two new additions to the CAA in 2005, with Northeastern being the other. Old Dominion has never faced the Panthers in program history. Georgia State defeated Wofford 3-0 last week in the Wofford/adidas Invitational. The Panthers are a relatively young squad, starting mostly freshmen. Freshman Dathan Knott leads the team with six goals scored and has been named CAA Rookie of the Week this season.

ODU next travels to Delaware Friday October 7th and Drexel Sunday October 9th. The Drexel match will be televised live on local channel WSKY at 12:00 noon. CN8, a Comcast network that stretches from Maine to Richmond, will also be televising the contest. The Monarchs next home contest is Friday October 14th against Northeastern.
