NORFOLK, VA--The 18th ranked Old Dominion University Soccer Monarchs look to continue their momentum Saturday afternoon as they travel to face the #20 Davidson Wildcats at Alumni Stadium. Game time is 2:00 p.m. Coming off a 3-0 home victory against #4 Virginia, the Monarchs now own a 4-1-1 overall record this season. Davidson took two wins on the road in the UCF/adidas Classic to up their mark to 5-1-1 on the year. ODU has won both career matchups against the Wildcats, taking a 2-0 win last September and a 3-2 decision in 1989.
ODU is currently ranked 18th by the NSCAA/adidas coaches poll, 21st by College Soccer News, and 23rd by Soccer Times. Senior forward Brian Cvilikas (Highlands Ranch, CO) tallied two goals in Wednesday's defeat of #4 Virginia, giving him five goals in the past three matches. Cvilikas has moved into 10th place on ODU's all-time goals scored list (22) and career points (50). With the win, the Monarchs extended their regular season home unbeaten streak to 28 matches dating back to September 2002. The 3-0 victory was the third time in program history Old Dominion has knocked off a Virginia team ranked in the top 5, also occurring in 1985 and 1997. ODU finished their regular season slate against ACC opponents with a 2-1-1 clip.
Davidson is coming off an impressive showing at the UCF/adidas Classic where they defeated host UCF 1-0 and Jacksonville 3-0, helping them climb up the Soccer America poll and land in the 20th spot. The Wildcats are coming off a five-game road trip that saw them go 3-1-1, losing only to Campbell. Davidson has been led by sophomore forward Robby Hoak, who has notched 4 goals and 10 points overall to spearhead the Wildcats' offensive front. Goalkeeper Ben Ashton is the Southern Conference leader in minutes played (656:28) and has earned two shutouts this season. Davidson is coached by Matt Spear, a Davidson graduate and former assistant who is in his fifth season as head coach.
The Monarchs will continue their North Carolina road trip next Friday when they travel to face UNC-Wilmington in their CAA opener. The Monarchs return home Sunday October 2nd to face new CAA addition Georgia State at the ODU Soccer Stadium.
